Do You Really Need Cardio Workouts?

Do you really need cardio workouts in your training program?

 

This is a question that I get asked weekly.  I put together a hunt or event specific training program and the individual wants to know why they need to run, bike, hike, etc.  

 

Well the simple answer is, you need cardio to live.  That simple!  You need cardiovascular health, a healthy heart, health weight to live the longest and healthiest you can possibly live.

Who needs Cardio?

Who needs cardio…we all need cardio.  Lets clear the air here.  I am not talking about the hiker, climber, the person whom knows that they need cardio workouts to perform their best.  I am talking about the individual that does not think that they need cardio for their activity.  I can guarantee that the person that is questioning the benefits of cardio is also the person who is overweight and/or the person who is out of breath walking down the block.  

 

Even tree stand hunters that sit numerous hours in a deer stand still needs a solid cardio base.  It takes a lot of effort to move with a 10 lb stand on their back quietly or move from truck to stand QUIETLY without disturbing the wildlife and your surroundings.  If you are huffing and puffing…trust me…you are giving away your position and trust me, the game that you re hunting are aware of your position and location.  

 

 

Where to Start?

Where to start comes down to the were you are now?  A person that is completely out of shape will have to start at a lower level than the individual that fell off the wagon from their daily workouts a month or so ago.

 

Here is a good approach to anyone getting ready to build their cardiovascular health.

 

1) Assess your current health by seeing a doctor.

2) Set weekly, monthly, quarterly, and annal health related goals.

3) Start slow with low volume and work in more each workout.

4) Make sure you build in rest.

5) Do not work through any injury.

6) Celebrate any gain as a victory.

7) Don’t stop, don’t give up!!!!

8) Stay hydrated.

9) Eat Healthy.

10) VICTORY!!
